On the 10 July 4iP are hosting a small informal breakfast seminar with Manuel Castells. Castells is one the foremost theorists on the power of communication. The event is free (first come first served) so come on down, have a croissant and fill up your brains.

Newspaper Club is a tool to help people make their own newspapers using online content. The brainchild of Russell Davies, Ben Terret and Tom Taylor, it allows users tag online content, collect and curate the stuff they want and turn it into a really good-looking printed product.

Everyone talks about the net’s impact on changing business models that will pay for all our innovation, but it still remains a murky area in most people’s minds, not least in the realm of public service media on the net.

Broadcast reports that 4iP is commissioning Dan and Adrian Hon’s Six to Start to develop a creative writing game for the iPhone and iPod Touch, backed by national education agency Learning and Teaching Scotland. The game, currently under development, aims to help users tap deep into their imaginations and develop their creative writing skills by responding to writer challenges through their iPhone. They say we all have a novel in us, and ‘All Write’ will help users find it.

Earlier this month 4iP hosted the first debate in our ‘recasting the net’ series – with panellists including Matthew d’Ancona, Tom Loosemore, Charlie Beckett and Helen Milner and an audience of digital luminaries discussing the nature of the ‘digital revolution’ – if there was one, if it matters, who controls it, and what the implications are of being excluded from it.

Thanks to everyone who joined us for Monday night’s “Where’s the Revolution” event – the first in the 4iP/Polis “Recasting the Net” series being developed by 4iP and Polis. The debate featured contributions from Matthew d’Ancona, Helen Milner and myself, a crunchy chair in Charlie Beckett, and - most importantly -100+ audience members keen to contribute.

Fair to say the event explored a more diverse range of themes than anticipated: community media, global monopolies, access and inclusion and the triumph of the academics - all within a central discussion aimed at exploring the power of the Internet to shape and determine the society, economics and democracy.
